What the book is about

Not a book of theory. A book of decisions.

Built Against the Odds brings together 50 stories from India and abroad, showing how companies grew through frugal thinking, scale, trust, innovation, distribution, and resilience.

The book is not just about famous companies. It is about the managerial choices behind their success: the risks they took, the systems they built, the markets they shaped, and the lessons today’s managers can apply.

Each story is short, self-contained, and written to be argued with — the kind of material that works in a classroom discussion, a leadership programme, or a Sunday afternoon.

About the author

Ramesh Subramaniam

Ramesh Subramaniam has spent over five decades working with senior managers across industry, government-linked organizations, manufacturing, marketing, industrial development, and institutional leadership.

A Post Graduate in Physics from IIT Bombay, he joined Bata India as a management trainee in 1971, spent over twenty-six years at Tata International — latterly as Vice President of the footwear business — served five years with UNIDO as a national expert, became the first Technical Director of FDDI in Noida, and later worked as President of Sri City.

That range across companies, institutions, and industrial development gives him a practical view of how businesses are built, scaled, and managed over time.
